Stump Grinding and Removal

If you call us to remove a tree from your property, our team will also evaluate the site for stump grinding and removal. Even though having your stump ground is not always something that is necessary, many of our customers would rather deal with the stump at the same time the tree is removed.

With professional stump grinding, you can use the location where the tree once was to install a flower bed or lay sod. Also, the stump grinder will create mulch, which you can use in your yard. If you are considering calling us for stump grinding services, you may have some questions. Keep reading to learn the answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

How Deep Will the Stump Grinder Go?

Usually, our team will grind around four to six inches below ground level. If a stump requires deeper grinding, you can request this; however, it will add to the cost of the job. However, there are some limitations regarding how far we can grind a stump.

Some of these limitations include:

The blade for the stump grinder is around 10 inches and will only be moved up and down to a certain depth.

A tree in shallow soil, like over limestone bedrock, may not have a total of six inches to grind.

Materials around or close to the tree can limit the depth that the grinder can go.

While stump grinders are powerful, they can only handle dirt, wood, and plant material. Some of the things that a grinder cannot deal with include:

Lawn irrigation, tree lighting wiring, buried hoses, sprinkler systems, swimming pools, patios, and walkways that keeps the grinder from reaching all of the roots; trees nearby that have roots beneath the stump being ground; rock, concrete, brick, or fencing near the stump.

Usually, we will not grind so deep that it could interfere with the utility lines or any buried cables.

Knowing what is under a tree stump or the roots can be challenging. This is even true for a homeowner. While our team is always careful when we grind a stump, we will not take responsibility for any damage that may occur to your irrigation pipes or other items that are found beneath the ground and that we do not know about. You need to let our team know about anything under the ground so that we can locate it and avoid it during the grinding process.

What Will be Left After the Stump Is Ground?

The blade will grind the surface roots and stump, and during this process, mulch made of dirt and plant material is created. The mulch that our stump grinding process produces is usually much more than the size of the original stump.
Mulch that is created by the stump grinding process will provide valuable organic material that will decompose faster than other types of mulch that are commonly used because there are very small pieces of wood in it, and more soil, which helps with the breakdown process. Our team will usually push the mulch into the area where the stump was, which is referred to as backfilling. Even after doing that, there may be a pile of mulch on the ground. Due to its makeup, the mulch will settle quickly, but you may want to use it in other parts of your yard because of the benefits it offers. You can use the mulch created by a stump grinder in your flower beds or around any other plants.

Is It Possible to Replant in the Area Where the Stump is Ground?

Sometimes, we are contacted to remove a tree that the homeowner wants to replace. However, we do not recommend doing this. Even if we provide a deeper grind, extensive root systems under the ground may impact the growth of a new tree. Also, if the tree we are removing had some type of disease, the disease could remain in the roots and it may be transmitted to the new tree that is planted. If replanting is the end goal, we can help you find the right location for your new tree.
